To successfully germinate cannabis seeds, provide the perfect trio: moisture, warmth (75–80°F / 24–27°C), and darkness. The most reliable method is the Paper Towel Method, which lets you verify taproots before potting. Expect the taproot to appear within 24 to 120 hours.
The Paper Towel Method (Step-by-Step)
- Moisten the towels: Wet two clean paper towels with distilled or dechlorinated water. They should be damp but never dripping wet.
- Place the seeds: Space the seeds about an inch apart on one of the paper towels. Cover them with the second towel.
- Create a dark, humid chamber: Place the paper towels inside a loosely sealed Ziploc bag or between two plates facing each other (like a clam).
- Find a warm, dark spot: Store the setup in a dark location at room temperature (ideal is 75–80°F).
- Wait for the taproot: Check the seeds every 24 hours. You will know they have germinated when the seed splits open and a small white tail (the taproot) emerges.
- Transplant: Once the taproot is about 1/4" to 1/2" long, it is ready to be planted.
Transplanting into the Growing Medium
Whether you are using soil, coco coir, or rockwool cubes, handle the sprouted seeds with extreme care:
- Use sterilized tweezers to pick up the seed by its hard shell, avoiding the fragile white root.
- Poke a small hole 1/4" to 1/2" deep in your growing medium.
- Place the germinated seed into the hole with the white taproot pointing downward.
- Cover it very lightly with loose soil or medium.
Essential Rules for Success
- Don't over water: Keep the area comfortably moist, but do not flood the medium. Excess water starves the seed of oxygen and causes rot.
- No added nutrients: Seedlings do not need fertilizers for the first 1 to 2 weeks. They get all their early nutrients directly from the seed.
- Introduce light gradually: Once the seedling emerges from the soil and sheds its shell, introduce it to gentle, indirect light so it does not stretch out and become weak.
